Level 3 in challenging behaviour and physical interventions Services

Private Sector, Education, Public Sector and Charities providing services to people with Autism and or Learning Disabilities. Children with emotional and behavioural difficulties.
Rationale
To increase understanding of why people, challenge, what legislation affects them and how to manage situations safely and ethically. Increase confidence in dealing with behaviour that people find challenging. To give people the ability to breakaway for difficult situations.
Taught Hours
14-21 hours
Entry requirements
Staff must work/support people who present with challenging behaviours.
Key Principles
This course is delivered to staff who support people who present with challenges at a low level and on occasion might require the need to use a breakaway technique or fending off. There is an emphasis on understanding why people behave the way they do.
Outline of Course and Physical
Legal Perspectives 2 hours
Policies, procedures and documentation including recording 1 hour
Causes of challenging behaviours including violence and aggression 7 hours

• Behavioural Phenotypes
• Mental health issues such as depression
Behaviour management strategies – Developing Individual Reactive Strategies
Passive avoidance strategies
The low arousal approach – SPACED (3 hours)
Breakaway techniques (3-7 hours)
• Wrist releases
• Hair protection
• Airway protection
• Biting protection
• Fending off
Theory Test (1 hour)
